Overview & Search

Get around Variant and find anything quickly.
  • Overview gives you quick access to the active prospect, Interactive Map, Bestiary, Notes & Checklists, Mission Tracker, Resource Calculator, guides, and Icarus tools.
  • Search at the top of Overview looks across Icarus guides, recipes, missions, prospects, checklists, and planning tools.
  • Open a result to jump directly to the matching guide, recipe, mission, prospect, or tool.

Interactive Map: Quick Start

Pick a prospect, filter markers, and place your own.
  1. Choose the current map from Active Prospect in the sidebar. Map-aware tools follow it automatically.
  2. Choose a marker type. Fauna choices follow the active map.
  3. Optional: enter a label and press Place Marker.
  4. Click the map on desktop, or tap it on mobile, to place the marker.
  5. Use Filter to show the marker types you want. Map Detail can stay on Auto or be forced to Performance / Full Detail. Reset View recenters the prospect.

Map Controls & Marker Editing

Zoom, pan, edit markers, and copy coordinates.
  • Mouse Wheel zooms around the cursor.
  • Right Mouse or Middle Mouse + drag pans.
  • Hover over the map to see its grid coordinate.
  • Drag your marker to move it. Left-click it to open the normal marker actions.
  • Drag one finger to pan and pinch with two fingers to zoom.
  • Tap an empty spot to briefly show its grid square, such as J14.
  • Drag a marker to move it. A normal tap still opens Edit/Delete. After choosing Place Marker, tap the map to add it.

Storms, Guides & Map Data

Weather tiers, field guides, Wiki links, and grid lookup.
  • Storms & Tiers follows the Active Prospect selected in the sidebar.
  • Guides & Wiki contains expandable field references and source links for deeper reading.
  • Grid Lookup finds saved and default markers near a grid such as J14, then lets you jump straight to it on the map.
Plan & track

Gameplay Tools

Open only the tool you are working with. The longer explanations stay tucked away.

Mission Tracker

Briefings, objectives, and mission locations.
Browse contracts by map, open briefings, check off objectives, and use View Location when a reviewed mission location is available.

Resource Calculator

Plan crafts and total the materials you need.
Search recipes, inspect crafting stations, add craft quantities to a plan, save custom/modded recipes, copy totals, and create a gathering checklist from the plan.

Bestiary

Creatures, biomes, traits, lore, and map locations.
Browse the full Bestiary or filter by prospect. Creature entries can show reviewed habitat regions on the Interactive Map and keep your own encounter notes.

Field Notebook

Folders, notes, search, and screenshots.
  • Create folders from the top bar, then expand one to add notes.
  • Use Notebook search across folder names and saved notes.
  • Press Ctrl + Enter while writing to save quickly.
  • You can attach screenshots while creating a note or add more later. Notes can keep up to six images.

Checklists

Personal task lists for runs, builds, missions, and prep.
Create prospect-specific or General lists, add sub-notes to objectives, send an objective to the Resource Calculator, and keep progress with your other Variant data.

Deep Mining & Exotics

Keep long-term resource and Exotic site records.
Deep Mining records deposits by map, grid, resource, drill state, and notes. Exotics tracks scanned, active, extracting, or depleted sites and their yields.

Expedition Planner

Trips, routes, companions, loadouts, and checklists.
Create named trips with a map, destination, companion, status, notes, and loadout checklist. An expedition can also be turned into a personal Icarus checklist.

Mounts & Pets

Stable records, imported saves, traits, and galleries.
Keep companion records with name, species, level, role, current location, gear/trait notes, and screenshots. The website uses Import Mounts.json; the installed app can show Refresh Mounts. Manual entry remains available in both.

Icarus Gallery

General screenshots kept separate from notes and companions.
Open the Gallery from Icarus Overview. It uses the same shared Gallery Storage choice as Notebook and companion images while keeping each area in its own subfolder.

Base Calculator & Planners

Quick estimates, saved 2D blueprints, and the 3D planner.
  • Quick Estimate handles simple rectangular builds; 2D View handles saved multi-level blueprints in the Build Gallery.
  • Import/export .vbp files or share codes, duplicate plans, use autosave history, export checklists, and optionally sync individual builds.
  • View in 3D opens the same blueprint for orbit/free-camera inspection and editing. The support overlay is a planning aid, not an exact copy of ICARUS structural-integrity calculations.
  • Set a map grid such as J14 in Plan Details to place or open the plan location on the Interactive Map.

Grid Lookup

Find markers near a grid and open that area on the map.
Enter a grid square exactly like C7 or J14. The tool uses the Active Prospect automatically.

Shared Maps

Private collaborative Icarus markers for people you invite.
  • Connect Google, then open Shared Maps. The tool uses that same short-lived Google session to verify access.
  • Choose a Variant display name. Collaborators see this name instead of your Gmail address.
  • Create a shared map or join one with a VSM invite code. Each shared map has its own code; one code can be shared with multiple people until it expires after 7 days or the owner creates a replacement for that map.
  • One shared workspace covers all four ICARUS maps: Olympus, Styx, Prometheus, and Elysium. You do not need a different share for each prospect.
  • On the Interactive Map, Save Marker To lists Personal plus every shared map you can access. Selecting a different shared map swaps the workspace instead of stacking overlays. Opening the Interactive Map from Shared Maps selects that shared workspace automatically.
  • Owners manage the map and collaborators. Editors can add/move/edit/delete their own shared markers. View Only members can see the overlay without changing it.
  • On mobile, hold an editable marker for about 2 seconds before dragging it.
Connection help: If Google Sync says Connected but Shared Maps says Not Connected, the two panels should now synchronize automatically. After installing an update, refresh once if an older installed-app tab is still open.

Install as an App

Use Variant like an installed companion on supported devices.
The install shortcut appears where the browser supports it. On iPhone/iPad, open Variant in Safari, tap Share, then choose Add to Home Screen.

Google Sync

Optional cross-device sync while Variant is open.
Connect Google to enable Auto Sync across devices. Google uses short-lived authorization, so Variant may occasionally ask you to reconnect. Normal Connect reuses the authorized session when possible; use Switch Google Account only when you actually want a different account. Check & Sync Now runs an immediate check.

Saved Data & Backups

What is local, what is portable, and what to back up.
  • Markers, Notebook text, checklists, Bestiary notes, mission progress, trackers, plans, and stable records save in this browser first.
  • User screenshots and note images use Gallery Storage: one shared PC folder on supported desktop browsers, or app storage on mobile/unsupported browsers.
  • Use Backup / Restore to download a separate JSON backup you control.
Important: Clearing site storage can remove local personal data. Keep Google Sync current and/or export a backup before clearing browser data.

Data Health & Source Updates

See what game/Wiki data this build was reviewed against.

Variant shows the Icarus build its data was checked against and can look for newer changes on the pages used by the site. Official patch notes win when sources disagree.

Troubleshooting

Quick fixes before you start deleting anything.
  • If something looks out of date after an update, refresh once with Ctrl + F5.
  • If the Mission Tracker, Resource Calculator, or Bestiary does not load, use Retry. Your saved progress stays in place.
  • Before clearing site data, use Backup / Restore to protect personal markers, notes, trackers, plans, and progress.
