Help / How to Use the Codex
Use Variant Codex to manage maps, markers, field notes, missions, crafting plans, expeditions, and other prospect data in one place. Personal progress is stored in this browser; create a backup before clearing site data or moving to another computer.

Interactive Map — Quick Start

  1. Choose the current map from Active Prospect in the left sidebar. The map and map-aware tools follow it automatically.
  2. Choose a marker type. Fauna choices automatically follow the active map.
  3. Optional: enter a label, then press Place Marker.
  4. Left-click once on the map to place it.
  5. Use the final dropdown to filter the visible marker type.

Map Controls & Marker Editing

  • Mouse Wheel zooms around the cursor.
  • Right Mouse or Middle Mouse + drag pans.
  • Hover over the map for its grid coordinate.
  • Left-click a marker for Edit/Delete. Double right-click it for the extended menu and Copy Coordinates.

Field Notebook

  • Create folders from the top bar, then expand a folder to add notes.
  • Use the Notebook search to find text across folder names and saved notes.
  • Press Ctrl + Enter while writing a note to save quickly.
  • Edit notes and folder names directly in place. Delete actions apply immediately without opening confirmation popups.

Storms, Guides & Map Data

  • Storms & Tiers follows the Active Prospect selected in the sidebar.
  • Guides & Wiki contains expandable field references and links for deeper reading.
  • What's Here? searches one grid code such as J14 and summarizes markers inside that square.

Backup / RestoreSave personal Codex progress to one JSON file and restore it later on the same or another browser.

Saved Data & Backups

  • Custom markers, Notebook notes, Bestiary notes, mission progress, trackers, plans, and stable data are local to this browser.
  • They do not automatically sync between devices or private/incognito sessions.
  • Use Backup / Restore to move or protect your personal Codex data.
Important: Clearing this site's browser storage can remove your personal Codex data. Maps, icons, default markers, guides, and built-in reference data remain part of the Codex. Personal progress can be protected with Backup / Restore.

Reference Source Updates

Some guides and reference sections are reviewed against the ICARUS wiki. The Codex can check the tracked source pages for newer revisions without changing any guide automatically.

No source check has been run this session.

Troubleshooting

  • If an icon or data list looks stale after an update, refresh the page once with Ctrl + F5.
  • Reference data loads when a data-heavy tool is opened. If a list cannot load, check the connection and use the Retry option shown in that tool.
  • If personal data behaves strangely after a major update, export a backup before clearing anything.
